Message from the president
Welcome back from Spring Break, Lancers! We look forward to seeing you back at school on Monday, March 24th.
I hope all Lancers, both teachers and students, had a restful, relaxing, and rejuvenating week with family and friends. While most of us spent time with loved ones, others traveled off-island to extend their learning. Mrs. Deborah Okada, our Lower School Music Teacher, accompanied 4 fifth- and sixth-grade students who participated in the American Choral Directors Association 2025 National Conference in Dallas, Texas. These students were selected from singers all across the country to join an exclusive treble honor choir. The girls performed well and continued the legacy of our rich choral heritage at Sacred Hearts Academy. In addition, Mrs. Whitney Grohowski, our Upper School Social Studies Department Chair, and Ms. Ululani Reyes, one of our Upper School Counselors, chaperoned 15 middle- and high-school students to Washington D.C. and New York City. During their trip, they braved the cold weather by visiting twenty historical sites in both cities. These student travel opportunities offer a unique opportunity to extend classroom learning by immersing students in real-world experiences. They allow students to broaden their understanding of our world. By visiting new places, students also developed essential life skills such as adaptability, communication, and independence, making learning both enriching and memorable. We thank our faculty for taking the time to organize these experiences with our students.
With just over two months left in the school year, there’s so many exciting events coming up in athletics, along with a variety of activities in both our Lower and Upper Schools. Please continue to support Lancer athletics by attending competitions this Spring season. This week, we have contests in golf, softball, flag football, track and riflery. Our students truly appreciate your presence. In our Lower and Upper Schools, we have parent-teacher conferences this week. Please keep an eye out for communication from your daughter’s teacher and/or respective school office regarding dates and times. We will also be inducting new members to the National Honor Society. Congratulations to these student leaders.
Parents and Guardians, let’s make the most of our time remaining in the 2024-2025 school year. Take time to talk with your daughter about what's happening at school, stay on top of her homework and project deadlines, and attend her special events. Your family’s participation in parent board activities is also a great way to show support. By staying involved, you help us foster a strong Academy community. We truly appreciate all you do to support the Lancer Nation—let’s finish the year strong together!

Message from the president
On Monday, March 17th, Catholics around the world celebrate the life of one of our most well-known holy men- St. Patrick of Ireland. My maternal grandmother was half-Irish, so this day was of particular significance for her and our family. I remember sitting around our dining room table on this day enjoying her Irish meal of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. It was accompanied by homemade Irish soda bread and American-made margarine. We would pray as a family and recall the life of St. Patrick. He was a 5th century bishop who was well known for using his knowledge of Irish culture to explain Christianity to the people. Through his evangelical work, he was a successful missionary for our Church. His full life not only included his ministry among the Irish people, but also his devotion to contemplative prayer and frequent penance.
As we are currently in the solemn season of Lent, let’s look to the life of St. Patrick to strengthen our prayer life and observe penitential practices. Choose rich and meaningful prayers that lead to deeper spiritual reflection. It may be a new prayer that allows your relationship with God to grow and flourish. Prayer can come in many forms, such as reflecting on Sacred Scripture from the Bible or focusing on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. Penitential practices may include apologizing to those we have wronged; encouraging healing divisions within our friendships and family; fasting; and accepting tasks without complaining. By implementing these practices, we will more fully participate in Lent 2025.
Although we are entering Spring Break for our faculty and students in Grades 1-12 at Sacred Hearts Academy, our mission of educating girls and young women persists. Our Early Learning Center (ELC) will continue to be in session for our littlest Lancers age 3 through Kindergarten. We welcome Academy and other students in Grades 1-8 for our on campus Spring Program from March 17th - 21st. Students will engage in hands-on and fun activities, such as arts, crafts, and water play. In addition, we will host a volleyball clinic for Grades 4-11. We also have a group of Upper School students heading to Washington DC and New York during Spring Break to learn more about our country’s history. They will be visiting over 20 historical sites! We wish them, as well as other families and friends of the Academy, safe travels this time of year.
As we head into Spring Break, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication to our mission. Your commitment makes all the difference, and I’m thankful for each of you. Please continue to keep Sacred Hearts Academy in your prayers this Lenten season.
I hope this Spring Break offers a time for personal renewal, spiritual reflection, and reconnection with family and friends. Please make time to rest, enjoy your loved ones, and recharge for the final months of the school year.
God bless you all, and I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus on Monday, March 24th.
Young Talent Shines at Donor Reception
The recent Donor Reception was graced with unforgettable performances by some of the Academy’s brightest young stars. The fourth-grade choir, led by Lower School Choir Teacher Deborah Okada, delivered a heartfelt performance that set the tone for the evening. Soloist Arabelle Hensley, '33, captivated the audience with a beautiful solo, while Shion Yamasaki, '28, mesmerized everyone with a stunning violin solo. The donors were left in awe, completely enraptured by the incredible talent and passion displayed by these remarkable students.
Cranes for Peace: A Symbol of Hope and Unity
We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of our Cranes for Peace campaign! Thanks to the incredible support of all our students, we reached our goal of 3,000 origami cranes, each one representing our shared hope for peace. The cranes, arranged into three sets of 1,000, are now beautifully displayed in Dr. Sato's office; the display will remain until mid-April, after which the cranes will be sent to Hiroshima as a gesture of our commitment to peace. Inspired by Sadako Sasaki’s story, this campaign has united us in sending a powerful message of healing and harmony. Thank you for being part of this inspiring journey!
Celebrating Women's History Month
March is Women's History Month and, while we at the Academy celebrate the contributions of young women every day, we will highlight them with a special week of activities following Spring Break. We invite you to celebrate the many accomplishments of women who've made our world better!
Academy Choir Shines at Choral Festival
The Hawai‘i Catholic Schools hosted this year’s annual Choral Festival, bringing together talented voices from across the state. The Academy's choir, led by Choral Director Agnes Brown, ‘19, proudly represented the school with a beautiful performance. It was an honor and privilege to take part in this inspiring celebration of music and faith.
Celebrating Amelia Akana’s National Writing Achievement!
Amelia Akana '26, has earned 3rd place in the prestigious National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) Writing Scholarship competition. This annual award recognizes exceptional young writers aged 16 to 22, celebrating their potential for future literary success. Amelia’s remarkable achievement not only showcases her extraordinary writing abilities but also comes with a $250 scholarship from NSAL. Please join us in congratulating Amelia on this well-deserved honor!
Sophomore Week: A Glimpse into a Bright Future!
This year’s Sophomore Week at the Academy was a celebration of growth, dreams, and endless possibilities! During ACP, our sophomores took a moment to reflect on their journeys by writing heartfelt notes to their future selves or friends. These messages were filled with positivity, motivation, and reminders of just how capable and strong they are. From sharing their hopes and dreams to reflecting on challenges they’ve already overcome, the students embraced the bright futures that lie ahead.
The week was also packed with fun and camaraderie, including a special treat from the Upper School Administration: a Mac & Cheese Bar! On Wednesday, the sophomores indulged in this cheesy delight, customized with toppings like bacon bits, hot sauce, broccoli, crispy onions, and seasoned bread crumbs. It was a delicious way to celebrate their achievements and the exciting path ahead.
Here’s to our sophomores—your futures are so bright, you’ve gotta wear shades! 🌟
Empowering Future Leaders
The Academy hosted an inspiring workshop for out Student Ambassadors, featuring Michelle Bartell, CEO of Aloha United Way. Ms. Bartell encouraged the students to follow their hearts, step into their communities to build meaningful networks, and create a lasting impact. She also shared personal stories about the power of introducing herself to others, being present, and forming incredible connections through genuine interactions.
The workshop left a lasting impression, with many students staying afterward to engage in one-on-one conversations with Ms. Bartell. She expressed how inspired she was by our students and shared how much she enjoyed the opportunity to connect with them.
This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of leadership, community engagement, and the impact of building strong relationships.

Message from the president
In this Sunday’s gospel reading, we hear about Jesus’s temptations in the desert. First, he is called to turn stones into bread. Next, he is told he will be given worldly power and glory. Lastly, he is asked to throw himself down from the height of a parapet and command the angels to catch him. Jesus ignores all of these temptations revealing his strong union with the Father. Throughout our life, we are tempted in many different ways that lead us away from God. These temptations often come in the form of distractions. We are distracted by social media with the constant need to engage in online content. We are distracted by our busy schedules when work and school demands leave us exhausted and stressed. We are distracted by our busy minds that often include negative self-talk and anxieties. Lent is that time of year within our Church when we can go to the Father in our darkness and enter into His light. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we refocus on the Passion and death of Our Lord so we are truly ready for the Resurrection at Easter. This Lent, look inward and deepen your spiritual practices so you can create space for true reflection, repentance, and renewal.
As we enter into this week, please note that Spring Break for Sacred Hearts Academy Upper and Lower School faculty and students will take place from Monday, March 17th through Friday, March 21st. The campus and its offices will remain open throughout the week. Our Early Learning Center will also remain open during this time. In addition, we also have an amazing Spring Program for boys and girls in Grades 1-8. The program runs daily from 7 am to 5 pm and includes two snacks. The Program fee is $325. There is also an optional volleyball clinic for boys and girls in Grades 4-8. We are still accepting students so sign up right away if you are interested in participating in Spring fun at the Academy! We welcome all Sacred Hearts Academy students back to campus following Spring Break on Monday, March 24th.
There are several events happening this week for our Academy community. Upper School grade checks take place on Monday, March 10th. Please check your daughters’ achievement on FACTS after this date to ensure she is making academic progress. Sacred Hearts Academy joins other Catholic Schools at the annual HCS Choral Festival on Thursday, March 13th. Please keep our Lancers in your prayers as they showcase the beauty of all-girls choirs. Lastly, we welcome students, parents, guardians, faculty, and staff to our Second Friday Morning Mass in our historic Chapel on Friday, March 14th, at 7:00 am. Enrich your Lenten season by joining your daughter at this daily Mass. Refreshments will be provided following the liturgy.
As we continue our Lenten journey, we encourage you to keep supporting your daughter's spiritual growth, just as we are here at the Academy. Family is at the heart of everything we do, and together, we can help guide our girls and young women toward a deeper understanding of faith, love, and service.
Thank you for being such an essential part of this journey.
Fr. Jeremy Leads Ash Wednesday Services for Students
Fr. Jeremy conducted the Ash Wednesday services, offering a meaningful start to the Lenten season for students. As they received ashes, they were reminded of the call to repentance and reflection, marking a solemn yet hopeful beginning to their spiritual journey.
MARCHING ON TO SENIOR YEAR
This event will include a mini college fair (representatives from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Washington State University, Pacific University, Cal Poly Pomona, and more!), a short presentation to detail the next steps in the college admissions process and transitioning to senior year, and an opportunity for Q&A.
4th Graders Share the Joy of Reading with 1st Graders
Recently, our 4th-grade girls eagerly paired up with 1st graders for a special session of our Reading Buddies program in our Lower School library. Throughout their time together, the older students took turns reading aloud, helping their younger buddies follow along and engage with the stories. The library buzzed with excitement as the 1st graders listened attentively, asked questions, and shared smiles with their reading partners. This meaningful program not only fosters a love for reading but also builds confidence, friendships, and a sense of mentorship between our students.

Message from the president
This week, we begin the season of Lent. “Lent is like a long retreat during which we can turn back into ourselves and listen to the voice of God.” This powerful quote from Pope Benedict XVI reminds us that Lent is a time to pause, reflect, and deepen our relationship with the Father. We are invited to look beyond the distractions of this world—things like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Netflix—and focus on what truly matters.
Lent also calls for self-discipline and sacrifice. It’s not just about giving something up to improve ourselves, but about making space for God to enter more fully into our daily lives. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we create room for growth in holiness and service to others.
We have the privilege of celebrating Mass twice this week—first on Ash Wednesday, March 5th, marking the start of Lent, and then again on First Friday, March 7th. These sacred liturgies are moments to come before the Father, to reflect on His love, and to recommit ourselves to walking with Him during this Lenten season.
Ash Wednesday will be especially meaningful as we receive ashes, a reminder of our mortality and our need for repentance. It marks the beginning of our Lenten journey that leads us closer to the heart of God.
First Friday Mass will offer us another opportunity to pause, reflect, and refocus our lives on Christ. Let us use this occasion to open ourselves to the grace and mercy God offers through the Eucharist and to renew our commitment to live in His image.
In addition, this week marks important milestones in the life of our school community.
Our Junior Ring Ceremony on March 3rd is a cherished tradition that symbolizes an important milestone in the journey of our Grade 11 students at the Academy. We look forward to celebrating this special moment with them and their families. Also, we have our Blood Drive on March 4th. This act of service helps give life to others. This is a powerful way for us to live out the call to serve our neighbors, and we encourage those who are able to participate to do so.
This season is a beautiful opportunity to grow in faith as a family and to draw closer to God. Please know that you are supported by our school community in this meaningful time of spiritual renewal. Let us walk this path together, growing in love and service to others. May God Bless You this Lent.
School Safety
We are pleased to share that our recent evacuation drill was a great success! Thanks to the cooperation, communication, and collaboration of our students, faculty, and staff, the drill was carried out in a timely, calm, organized, and efficient manner.
We are incredibly proud of our girls for demonstrating responsibility and attentiveness throughout the process. Their ability to follow directions and work together reinforces our commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for everyone on campus.
Also, please be reminded that our drop off and pick up areas are at the front of the Administration Building as well as our 5th Avenue autoline. Please do not drop your Lancers off at the back gate on 6th Avenue (near the outdoor basketball court). This area is not supervised and the gate is very heavy, not intended for pedestrian traffic.
At Sacred Hearts Academy, safety remains our highest priority. We deeply appreciate your continued support in reinforcing the importance of these procedures at home. Your partnership plays a vital role in maintaining a strong, prepared school community.
Mahalo for your trust and cooperation as we work together to keep our school safe!

Empowering Hawaii’s Youth
The Center for Tomorrow's Leaders (CTL) Program has been a transformative force in enriching the minds of Hawaii’s youth. Dedicated to nurturing future leaders, this program equips young people with the skills and confidence needed to take charge and make a positive impact in their communities.
A key highlight of the program is Government Day, where students have the unique opportunity to meet with prominent leaders in Hawaii’s government. Through these interactions, they gain valuable insights into how leadership is applied to address challenges and drive progress for the islands. This hands-on experience inspires them to envision their own roles in shaping Hawaii’s future. The Academy's representative, seniors Sara Inao and Ofa Tuiatifu, had the opportunity to meet with Mayor Rick Blangiardi, engaging in a meaningful discussion about the importance of youth involvement in community leadership and the role of education in shaping Hawaii’s future.
LOWER SHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
This year we have introduced our Project Based Learning course for Grades 4-6. It is a hands-on, student-centered approach where children actively explore real-world problems and challenges. Instead of traditional lessons, students work on meaningful projects over time, developing critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills. It encourages curiosity and independence, helping students connect what they learn in class to real-life situations. This quarter, our focus question is, What can we do to make sure everyone in our school feels like they belong and matter? Here is a glimpse of our students’ progress:
Calendar reminders:
- 3rd Quarter ends on Friday, March 7
- Spring Break for Grades 1 - 6 (No School): March 17-21
- ELC (Preschool - Kindergarten) Spring Intersession (optional): March 17-21
- Spring Conferences: Thursday, March 27 and Friday, March 28. Both days are early dismissal and we will be offering after school care.

Message from the president
As we enter the final three weeks leading up to Spring Break, I wanted to take a moment to check in, offer the Academy’s support, and highlight some important reminders. These last weeks are always an exciting time, but they can also be a challenge as students balance finishing projects, preparing for assessments, and staying focused as we approach a well-deserved break.
Since we are near the mid-semester point, it’s natural for students (and parents/ guardians!) to become more and more excited about the upcoming break. We want you to know that we are here to support both you and your child during this busy time. To help your daughter stay focused and motivated, we encourage you to regularly discuss your daughter’s assignments, assessments, progress, and grades. Establishing a consistent routine at home can make a big difference in staying on top of her studies. This includes a designated quiet space for schoolwork, detailed schedule for studying, or simply encouraging breaks between tasks.
Furthermore, we are here for your daughter’s success and can provide help as needed, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to her teachers for extra academic support, counselors for additional guidance, and administrators for questions or concerns. We are here to help! We are committed to making sure every student finishes this semester strong and is set up for success as we look ahead to the next school year.
As we begin preparing for the 2025-2026 school year, we would like to remind you that re-enrollment for current students is forthcoming. Please be on the lookout for more detailed information via email coming soon from our Business Office. It is important to complete the re-enrollment process in a timely manner so that we can plan effectively for the upcoming school year. We also look forward to welcoming new families to the Academy! Please refer your friends, colleagues, and family members to our Admissions Office for more information. In partnership with you, we can help theAcademy expand its mission to reach more girls and young women.
We understand that the next few weeks can feel like a busy stretch, but we are all in this together! Our goal is to ensure that your daughter continues to grow and thrive—whether in her classroom or through the co- and extra-curricular activities we have planned for her this semester. Thank you for your ongoing support! Together, we will make these final weeks before Spring Break productive, positive, fun, and joyful.

Message from the president
On this President’s Day, we are reminded of the enduring importance of leadership in our country. As we reflect on the leaders who have shaped our nation, I’m also reminded of an inspiring biblical figure whose leadership still resonates today—Deborah. Deborah, one of only 12 judges mentioned in the Old Testament Book of Judges, is the only woman noted. She was a prophetess, revered for her wisdom and ability to settle disputes that came before her as she sat under a date palm tree. Her wisdom was a gift from God, and through her, God’s word was made manifest in her leadership.
Deborah’s story reminds us that leadership, whether in biblical times or in our modern world, is about serving others with courage and wisdom. Today, as we celebrate leadership in our country, we also honor the countless women who serve in leadership roles across our nation. There are currently 2,469 women serving in state legislatures, 151 in Congress, 12 as governors, and 4 as Supreme Court justices—each embodying the qualities of leadership, wisdom, and service.
At Sacred Hearts Academy, we are proud to be preparing the next generation of female leaders for our nation. Our students are not only being educated in secular leadership, but they are also learning the spiritual dimensions of leadership. Leadership is a gift given to us by the Holy Spirit so that we may serve others with humility, compassion, and grace, just as Deborah did. Our girls and young women are discovering how to lead with faith, purpose, and a sense of responsibility to both our nation and our Lord.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to educate and empower the next generation of leaders.

Clothes Closet
The Clothes Closet Program managed by our Parent Board is helping the Administration prepare for the transition to a new uniform vendor. They would like to inform you of some important changes to our procedures.
Effective Tuesday, February 18th, the Clothes Closet will now operate on a purchase-only basis. They accept cash, Venmo and credit card payments. We will be drawing down our existing supplies in anticipation of a new vendor who will provide Sacred Hearts Academy with high quality uniforms, and as such, students will no longer be permitted to borrow these uniform items out of the Upper School Front Office as they have done so in the past.
We strongly encourage all families who want to purchase uniforms from the Clothes Closet to do so during this time. Tuesday, February 18th - Friday, February 21st is the last week that the Upper School Front Office will actively handle the Clothes Closet. They will be ready to handle sales from 8:30 am - 3:15 pm. Afterwards, items can be purchased from the Lancer Locker, located in the Upper School Library, on Mondays, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Parking on campus in front of the Administration Building is available beginning at 7:30 am.
We understand that this is a change, and we are here to support you through this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to Shyann Fermahin at sfermahin@sacredhearts.org. For any questions regarding uniform accommodations for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year, please contact Gwen Sagapolutele at gsagapolutele@sacredhearts.org for Upper School students in Grades 7-12 and Cynthia McIntyre at cmcintyre@sacredhearts.org for Lower School students in the ELC through Grade 6. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

FEBRUARY 2-8, 2025 - SHAGRAM#24
Message from the president
As we step into February, I want to take a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve already made this year and to express my gratitude for your continued commitment to Catholic education.
Coming off of Catholic Schools Week, I am energized and invigorated about our future! As the 2025 campus host for the Hawaii Catholic Schools’ Annual Conference for Catholic School Educators (ACCE), we welcomed hundreds of priests, principals, and teachers from across Hawai‘i to celebrate our holy vocation of educating God’s children. Dr. Steven Cheeseman, President of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), gave the keynote address affirming our excellent work and sharing data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is also known as the Nation’s Report Card. Results show that Catholic school students persist in producing higher achievement levels than their public school peers. In addition, Catholic school students continue to outpace public schools in math and reading, while public school student achievement has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Sacred Hearts Academy is known for our strong academic program. We prepare students for success in higher education and beyond. We provide a well-rounded curriculum that not only educates the mind, but also the soul. We educate our students about the deeper meaning of life, how to live virtuously, and how to make the world a better place. This combination of strong academics and faith-based learning gives our students a unique advantage in understanding the world from a perspective of compassion, social justice, and service to others.
We could not do this good work without the support of our families- thank you for your continued partnership. We value the role you play as the primary educators in helping your daughters navigate this important time in their lives. Your continued encouragement for them to participate fully in the life of our school is commendable.
Let’s make the most of February! This week’s activities include Freshman Week, First Friday Mass, and Grade 9 Mother/Daughter Luncheon. Don’t forget to support our Student Athletes throughout this current season at competitions and games. I am excited for all that lies ahead for Sacred Hearts Academy, and I look forward to celebrating this month’s accomplishments together.

Cudiamat Skybox Blessed in Heartwarming Ceremony
The blessing of the Sacred Hearts Academy Skybox took place this past Monday in the Dorothy Macy Nobriga Gymnasium, officiated by Fr. Jeremy. We are also grateful for support from GN Wilcox Trust and other supporters for their generous donations.
The event brought together past and current student-athletes, faculty, parents, and supporters. Student Ambassadors guided attendees on tours of the newly completed skybox, showcasing the impressive addition to the school’s facilities.

JANUARY 26-FEBRUARY1, 2025 - SHAGRAM#23
Message from the president
We celebrate Catholic Schools Week in the United States from January 26th - February 1st. It’s a time to recognize and honor the role Catholic schools play in providing quality education that is not just academic, but also values-based. Catholic schools aim to educate the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—grounded in the teachings of the Church.
All throughout this week, Sacred Hearts Academy will engage its students in many different activities that help them live out their faith through worship and prayer. On Monday morning, our Upper School comes together for Song Practice and Eucharistic Adoration in our historic St. Margaret Mary Chapel. Eucharistic Adoration is an opportunity for our students to deepen their faith and understand more fully the central role of the Eucharist in Catholic life. In addition, it allows them to experience the sacredness of the sacrament in a tangible way, which can inspire a personal connection to our faith. On Thursday morning, we come together to worship at our annual LIFE Mass. The LIFE Mass has been a tradition since I was a student at Sacred Hearts Academy. Led by members of the LIFE Team, this Mass is then followed by our LIFE Walk for students in Grades 7-12. They go out into the community to show their school spirit and have lunch together at a nearby park. It is a day for our students to make memories that will last a lifetime. Our Lower School students will also have LIFE activities on campus on Thursday, January 30.
At the conclusion of Catholic Schools Week is the Annual Conference for Catholic School Educators (ACCE) on Friday, January 31st. Sacred Hearts Academy is proud to host this annual conference that brings together all Catholic School educators in the entire State of Hawai‘i. This is a non-instructional day for students allowing them to have a three-day weekend. We welcome back our students on Monday, February 2nd.
This week reminds us how blessed we are to live in a country where we can give the gift of a values-based education to our children. Sacred Hearts Academy has been educating girls and young women in the Christian tradition for over 115 years. Our successful alumnae are leaders not only in their communities, but in our state and the world. Thank you for supporting our mission and for helping to keep Catholic Schools as an integral part of educating our keiki in Hawai‘i.
International Visitors to Campus
Last week, the Academy welcomed two groups of visitors. On Tuesday, January 21st, 20 Korean teachers participated in a cultural exchange organized by the University of Hawai‘i. They were introduced at Flag, observed classes, met with faculty, and learned about the hula and the Hawaiian culture from our students. Then, on Friday, January 24th, Mr. Masahiko Suruga, Principal of Himeji International School in Japan, visited the Academy. Himeji International School educates girls and young women from birth through high school. Principal Suruga was joined by his wife, Kaori Suruga, who is the Director of the Preschool at Himeji International School. Dr. Brandy Ann Sato and Mrs. Cleo Eubanks hosted Mr. and Mrs. Suruga for the morning. They toured the campus and met with our Campus Minister Sr. Katherine Francis Miller ss.cc. and our Chaplain Fr. Jeremy Sabugo ss.cc. Sacred Hearts Academy is exploring a potential partnership with Himeji International School to include student exchanges and travel opportunities.

JANUARY 19-25, 2025 - SHAGRAM#22
Message from the president
We observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the third Monday of January each year. It commemorates the life and work of the civil rights leader who advocated for nonviolent resistance to racial segregation and injustice in the United States. His work aligns with our Catholic Social Teaching. First, King advocated for the life and dignity of every human person, regardless of a person’s culture or ethnicity. Second, he believed in the human family and a community that is inclusive of all. Third, he was deeply concerned about the poor and vulnerable in our world. King saw the connection between racism and poverty and championed efforts to address this through laws and policies. Fourth, he stood in solidarity with others for justice and peace in our world. Fifth, he believed it was everybody’s responsibility to speak out against social injustices, particularly as he saw them in the United States. Lastly, we are all caretakers of our world and the people in it. We are called to be the keepers of our sisters and brothers. We must protect all who live on this planet and strive to make it a better place. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a reminder for us to act with love.
The mission of Sacred Hearts Academy is to educate girls and young women to be leaders and change-makers in our world. As a Baptist minister, King’s faith played a central role in his activism. In arguably his most famous speech, King says his dream is for justice to “surge like waters, and righteousness like an unfailing stream.” This line from Amos 5:24 was written against the injustices during the prophet’s time. Our students learn that it is their moral imperative to bring about a more just, peaceful, and holy world in our time. For example, students do this through engaging in service. A recent and notable example is our recent mission trip to the Philippines. Students actively served alongside our Sacred Hearts Sisters in educating young children, providing meals to the hungry, and sharing their joy and love of Christ with the elderly. They were the changemakers in this community.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a national holiday for a reason. We must be active participants in bringing about the Kingdom of God. We must work together to create a society where peace, dignity, and equality are experienced by all people. I look forward to partnering with our Academy community to be channels of peace.

Message from the president
Happy New Year and welcome to a new semester in our school community! As you have heard, the Church has entered into a jubilee year, the theme of which is “Pilgrims of Hope.” Every one of us within the Sacred Hearts Academy community is a pilgrim. As pilgrims, we are on a spiritual journey to deepen our connection with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:5 tells us that “Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us on our ongoing journey to seek God's grace and strive for holiness. May our teachers, staff, parents, and guardians continue to educate our children to be knowledgeable and compassionate human beings who bring hope and peace to our troubled world. May God fill us with faith, joy and especially hope for the future.
As we begin another semester at Sacred Hearts Academy, I want to remind you of the many ways you can be involved in our school community. Your partnership is essential to creating a vibrant and supportive environment for our students. Please note the upcoming events on your family’s calendar:

DECEMBER 22-28, 2024 - SHAGRAM#20
Message from the president
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This prologue of John’s gospel is one of the most well-known scripture in the New Testament. On the Nativity of the Lord, God became visible in the Word made flesh. He came as one of us in order to shine a light in the darkness of our world. He was born to guide us towards salvation. On Christmas Day, we truly see not only God’s glory but his love manifested in a small child. A child who was laid lovingly by Mary and Joseph in a simple manger. From these humble beginnings, he grew up to become the Savior of our world.
On behalf of Sacred Hearts Academy, I wish you a Merry Christmas. As we approach this season, let us rejoice and be glad. May you enjoy time with family and friends while reflecting on the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us. Remember to take time to pray and be thankful for the graces we received from the Father. May you renew your mind and fill your hearts with the Spirit as we begin a new calendar year.
As I reflect on these last six months as President of the Academy, I am overwhelmed with a sense of deep gratitude. Thank you to the entire Lancer community for welcoming me back! I am invigorated by the strong sense of sisterhood and mission on our campus. Next year will bring new engagement and innovation to our entire community in alignment with our mission of providing girls and young women with an exceptional education through the experience of God’s compassionate love.
I look forward to welcoming you back in the new year, when we gather again on January 7th, to begin anew. Until then, may the joy of the Christmas season fill your hearts and homes with love.

Message from the president
The Advent season is a time of waiting in three ways. First, Advent is a season of expectation. We wait expectantly for Christ, yet we do not know the form that appearance will take. Second, Advent is a season of making space for Christ. During this time of the year, we are so focused on our studies, special events, activities with friends, and family commitments. We must focus less on this secular world and more on strengthening our spiritual relationship with God. Third and lastly, Advent is a season of hope. We wait together for Christ’s love to shine through the darkness of our times. We are waiting for the Savior of the world (Phil 3:20).
There is much excitement on the Sacred Hearts Academy campus as this is the last week of school in 2024. Tomorrow, our Dance students take the stage at the Hawai‘i Theater for their annual performance of the Nutcracker at 6:30 pm. This is the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season! There are still a few tickets remaining if you have not purchased your seats yet. See you tomorrow at the show!
Our littlest Lancers will celebrate their Spirit Week from Monday, December 16th through Friday, December 20th. These Lower School students will bring fun and joy to our entire campus community throughout this upcoming week as they prepare for their Christmas Sharing on Friday, December 20th. I can not wait to see their performances in our historic Chapel! It is a beautiful way to prepare for the coming of our Lord.
In addition, our Christmas Paraliturgy is on Monday, December 16th, at 8:00 am in our gym. This is one of the most beloved traditions at Sacred Hearts Academy. It is followed by our Upper School Lancer Christian Communities’ (LCC) meetings during lunch on Tuesday, December 17th. This is their last event of the calendar year. As you can see, this week has many opportunities for faith formation and spiritual renewal.
Our older Lancers will start their final Semester 1 exams on Wednesday, December 18th. They will be completed on Friday, December 20th. Please be mindful of the special schedule for our Upper School students. A few words of advice for our students. First, I encourage all students to take a deep breath. Preparing for exams can feel overwhelming, but remember, it’s all about staying organized and focused. Create a study schedule and prepare your exam prep materials; stay healthy this week with proper eating and sleeping; and keep a positive attitude. You’ve got this!
Advanced notice that the Sacred Hearts Academy campus will be closed on the following dates: 12/23, 12/24, 12/25, 12/26, 12/30, 12/31, and 1/1. Our faculty and staff are looking forward to spending time with their families and friends after a busy end to the 2024 year. Thank you for your understanding.
Lastly, the Christmas Spectacular concludes on Sunday, December 22nd. If you have not seen it, I highly encourage you to do so! Last weekend, we welcomed over 1,000 guests to our campus. Nearly all of The Year Christmas was Almost Cancelled shows have been sold out. Hundreds attended the nightly Snow & Light Shows last weekend. Santa has been quite busy taking selfies with children of all ages. I have been on Living 808 and KHON-2 News promoting this event and encouraging our Hawai‘i families to visit our campus. The feedback has been resoundingly positive. I thank Mo‘olelo Studios for bringing this event to our campus. It has been a wonderful partnership. Their vision for providing every family an opportunity to have a safe and joyful Christmas experience in the heart of Honolulu has been achieved.

Message from the president
We look forward to the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, December 9th. This day is one of the most important Marian feasts of the Church. Students will wear their white uniforms as we come together as an entire community to recognize God’s choosing of Mary to be our “model of holiness.” Mary was chosen from among all women to be the Mother of God. As a Mother to our Savior, she holds a special place in our lives. She is a model of womanhood for the ages and an inspiration for our girls and young women at Sacred Hearts Academy.
This is another exciting and busy week for Sacred Hearts Academy! We are truly blessed to have so many special events focused on our students. On December 10th, Upper School students will have an opportunity to participate in ‘Sip and Self Care.’ They will drink hot chocolate with faculty and friends while reflecting on their physical, mental, and spiritual health. We pray for them as they prepare to conclude the first semester of the school year. Our Performing Arts Department will be showcasing their immense talent this week. Our Upper School Band Concert is on Wednesday, December 11th, at Mamiya Theatre starting at 6:00 pm. Our Upper School Choir Concert will be held on Thursday, December 12th, in our Chapel beginning at 6:00 pm. Lastly, the Sacred Hearts Academy’s production of the Nutcracker will take place on Sunday, December 15th, at 6:30 pm at the Hawai‘i Theatre. Please come and support all of our amazing performing artists!
Lastly, this weekend officially starts the Christmas Spectacular at Sacred Hearts Academy! Mo‘olelo Studios has been an amazing partner these last few months in preparing our campus for this special event. I can not tell you how many selfies have been taken by our students in front of the almost two-story tall Christmas tree in the middle of our campus and how many visitors have walked through our Administration Building and been in awe of how our campus has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland. We’ve had Crumbl cookies to start off our Thanksgiving, participated in a snow show after our morning Flag Ceremony this past Wednesday, and been a witness to the transformation of our campus to a beautiful place that celebrates Christmas. I can not thank Mo‘olelo Studios enough for their gift of joy to our school and our students these last several weeks. I encourage everyone to come on campus from December 6th - 22nd on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to experience the Christmas season like never before.
So as we jump into another exciting and busy week, let’s continue to focus on our mission. We are here to educate and form girls and young women to be holy like Mary and to transform the world into a peaceful place. Wishing you a week full of life, love, and laughter.

Message from the president
On Thanksgiving, I joined a few of my friends at the Institute of Human Services (IHS) on Kaaahi Street in downtown Honolulu to prepare and serve meals to those facing hardships in our community. This has become a tradition for us during this time of year. We believe that Thanksgiving is not only about celebrating with family and friends, but also about giving back to those who may not have enough to eat on this day.
I learned the value of service to our community while a student at Sacred Hearts Academy. We were taught to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, who came to serve and not to be served. This type of service at IHS embodies the true spirit of Thanksgiving—showing kindness, compassion, and generosity to others. When we serve others, we help build stronger communities and remind ourselves of the value of connection and empathy.
At Sacred Hearts Academy, service to the dear neighbor is an integral part of our curriculum and is interwoven into all aspects of school life. It’s an opportunity for our students to make a positive impact, whether through small acts of kindness or larger efforts that bring people together. That is why I am proud to say that Sacred Hearts Academy provides 40,000 hours per year of community service to the people of Hawaii. We continue the legacy of service our Sisters started 115 years ago when they decided to educate the young women of Hawai‘i to be servant leaders for others.
May God bless you and your family today. A gentle reminder that our campus is closed on Friday, November 29th. Our campus opens its doors once again to our faculty, staff, and students on Monday, December 2nd. Wishing you all a joyful and fulfilling Thanksgiving weekend and a renewed sense of purpose in service to others.
Giving Thanks and Sharing Aloha
Today, our school community gathered for a beautiful Thanksgiving paraliturgy, uniting in prayer and gratitude as a community. Students demonstrated the true spirit of Thanksgiving by bringing canned goods and food donations for our annual food drive. Honoring Lā Kūʻokoʻa: A Celebration of Hawaiian Sovereignty
Mahalo to Kumu Keonilei Lealiifano, our ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi teacher, for organizing this year's Lā Kūʻokoʻa celebration during our daily morning gathering as a school community. Lā Kūʻokoʻa marks the day Hawaiʻi joined the family of nations, a historic occasion once celebrated by citizens across the islands. Families, friends, and communities would gather, often at ʻIolani Palace, to honor Hawaiʻi through song and hula.
We are deeply grateful to Kumu for inviting special guests, including several Academy alumnae, to enrich the event. Together, we united in prayer and sang Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī and Hawaiʻi Aloha, celebrating our shared heritage and love for Hawaiʻi.
Mahalo nui loa, and Hauʻoli Lā Kūʻokoʻa!

Message from the president
As we approach the week of Thanksgiving, I want to take this opportunity to pause and reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon us. We are deeply grateful for the gift of this school community — a place where faith, learning, and love come together.
I thank our students, whose hard work and faithful actions bring me joy every day. I thank our parents and guardians, whose support and nurturing of their daughters in partnership with our school is a blessing. I thank our grandparents, whose guidance of their granddaughters help them to become young women who grow in knowledge and virtue. I thank our faculty and staff, whose dedication to the mission of Sacred Hearts Academy is inspiring. Lastly, I thank our Sisters, who created an exemplary school that provides an all-girls Catholic education to the people of Hawaii and the world. I have the privilege of continuing their legacy now and into perpetuity.
We have a shortened week at the Academy with instructional classes taking place from Monday, November 25th - Wednesday, November 27th. We will celebrate our Thanksgiving liturgy as an entire school community on Wednesday, November 27th. This is our way of gathering around the altar and offering gratitude for the gift of Christ’s sacrifice. May this liturgy bring us closer to one another through our love of Christ as we deepen our relationship to the Father.
The Upper and Lower School Offices will close at 2:00 pm on Wednesday. After school care will still be provided on Wednesday for our families although I encourage families to pick up their children promptly to allow our wonderful teachers and staff to begin their well-deserved break with their families. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.
Our next SHAgram will be published on Wednesday as well. The Campus will be closed on Thursday, November 28th, and Friday, November 29th. The Campus will reopen to welcome back faculty, staff, and students back to school on Monday, December 2nd.
Thank you for all you do to support Sacred Hearts Academy. Have a blessed week.

Message from the president
On Thursday, November 14th, we celebrated our grandparents at the Upper School with a light breakfast and program. It was such a joy to see our kupuna gathered together on our campus. We proudly honored them by sharing the gifts of dance, song, music, and prayer. It was a wonderful way to express our thanks for their love and support of their granddaughters as well as Sacred Hearts Academy.
Our grandparents hold a special place in our hearts. They teach us invaluable lessons rooted in our gospel values. Grandparents express their love and care by providing us moments filled with joy and laughter. I am forever grateful for my grandparents who were strong supporters of the Academy. They picked my sister and me up from school, cheered us on at our athletic events and extra-curricular activities, and made sure that we had all that we needed to make our school experiences special. I always knew that if my mother and father weren't able to supply those special items needed for school, my grandparents would always find a way to ensure I had them. I am forever blessed to have had them in my life.
In the midst of your holiday preparations and the busy Fall season, please take time to thank our grandparents and all family members who touch our lives. Plan to spend time with them this upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas. Cherish your family traditions and make beautiful memories together. We thank them for continuing to support our students during this beautiful time of year.

Message from the president
Each Veteran’s Day, I fondly remember my maternal grandfather. He was a proud graduate of Saint Louis School and a former employee of Matson Ocean Shipping, Truck, Rail & Logistics Company where he humbly served as a clerk for over fifty years. It was only when I was helping him apply for a Hawai‘i State Identification Card that I discovered he was a veteran. He then told me that he was drafted into the military after the bombing of Pearl Harbor during World War II. Although he was very proud of serving his country, he never spoke of his experience.
Saint Martin of Tours, whose feast day is on November 11th, was also a former soldier. Born in 336, he served in the Roman Army. He is best known for a simple act of charity- giving a part of his military cloak to a pauper who was sitting on the side of the road. That very night, Martin was visited by Our Lord. It was Our Lord he had clothed. This simple act of charity defined his life. Saint Martin went on to live as a religious, trading in his military warfare for spiritual warfare and bringing the Faith to the people throughout Europe.
I thank all of our veterans for their service to our country. At Sacred Hearts Academy, we celebrated our veterans with a special Flag ceremony, program, and a light breakfast on Friday, November 8th. Their courage, dedication, and commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear make you a true hero in our eyes. Thank you for your strength, your bravery, and the example you set for all of us. We are forever grateful for all that you have done for our country.
Sacred Hearts Academy will be closed on Monday, November 11th, in remembrance of the service and sacrifice of our veterans. Please continue to pray for them and for our country now and forever. Mahalo nui loa and I look forward to seeing all of our faculty, staff, and students back on campus on Tuesday, November 12th.

NOVEMBER 3 - 9, 2024 - SHAGRAM #13
Message from the president
Saint Francis of Assisi (ca. 1181-1226) is one of the Church’s most beloved saints and best known for his conversion story as the son of a wealthy merchant whose heart is transformed after meeting a leper and giving him his cloak. He is the patron saint of the poor, underprivileged, nature and animals. Although we are very familiar with Christ’s many miracles throughout his life, we don’t really consider all the miracles he works through the lives of the saints, just like Saint Francis of Assisi. On November 1st, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints. A special day where we recognize individuals whose love for Christ was so intense that they radiated holiness to all who encountered them. We are all Saints in the making. We were recently reminded of our call to holiness during our First Friday Mass. As we begin the month of November, let us always remember that we follow in the footsteps of these holy men and women. Their lives are true examples of faith, hope, and love. May we, as a Sacred Hearts Academy community, grow together in Christian virtue during this month of gratitude and Thanksgiving. May God Bless you this upcoming week.

OCTOBER 27 - NOVEMBER 2, 2024 - SHAGRAM #12
Message from the president
As we wrap up October, I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support of Sacred Hearts Academy. Your involvement in various activities, whether through volunteering, participating in events, or simply encouraging your children, has made a significant impact. I want to particularly thank our Parent Board, Mo ‘olelo Studios, and all parents, guardians, students, and friends of the Academy who made Fright Night a resounding success. We appreciate your partnership in bringing this event to our school community.
We have several special events to look forward to this upcoming week. Please continue to support our student athletes, particularly our cheerleaders and our riflery team, as they enter an important week of competition. As Halloween approaches, pay particular attention to costume guidelines from our Lower and Upper Schools. Costumes should be school-appropriate, modest, and not scary. Students should not have masks that cover the entire face for safety reasons and attire should allow for easy movement. All costumes must be in alignment with our dress code. Please direct specific questions to your respective school administrators.
We look forward to continuing this journey together as we enter November. Next week Friday, November 1st, is First Friday Mass. All students must wear their white skirts. It is also the Solemnity of All Saints. The Solemnity of All Saints is a feast in the Catholic Church that was originally instituted to honor the Christian martyrs of the late Roman Empire. We honor all of the saints and continue to join in prayer for the building up of a culture of life, marriage, and religious liberty.
Know that I appreciate all that you do for our school. May God Bless you this upcoming week. Thank you once again for your incredible support

Message from the president
We welcomed back faculty and students this week from a restful Fall Break. Students dived right back into their studies, embracing the energy and enthusiasm that comes with returning to school. I am sure our students shared with their friends and teachers the exciting activities that took place over the Fall Break. As we enter into the second half of the Fall Semester, the Academy has a number of events coming up. Please plan on attending our annual Fright Night on Saturday 10/19 from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm. This event is open to all Academy families and will include music, games, and prizes. Come dressed to impress with your best costumes and prepare to be wowed by the transformation of our campus into a spooky wonderland. Furthermore, the Fall Athletic Season is heating up with competitions in volleyball, cross country, riflery, cheer, tennis, and bowling. Come out and support our Lancers! In addition, our Upper School will also be hosting an SAT on Wednesday 10/23 and a College Financial Aid Event on Thursday 10/24. Lastly, this week we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint John Paul II on Tuesday 10/22. He reminded us that we are called to mission- to be the light of Christ to others in the world. We are called to proclaim the Gospel, by witness and word. We are called to holiness with Mary as our model. So as you start your weekend, remember that we are an Easter people and Alleluia is our song! My God Bless you and your family.

OCTOBER 13-19, 2024 - SHAGRAM #10
Message from the president
I hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating Fall Break! A friendly reminder that we welcome all faculty and students back on our beautiful campus on Monday, October 14th. As we jump back into our studies, I’m excited to see everyone and hear about your Fall Break experiences as we reconnect with our school’s mission, continue the pursuit of our goals, and navigate the remainder of the semester together. Remember, that every day of learning is a new opportunity for growth, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. This week we jump right into exciting activities and events at the Academy.
We will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 16th in the Upper School. This standardized test serves as a great way to find out how prepared our students are for college and career. The PSAT/NMSQT measures skills in reading, writing, and math and is also used to determine National Merit Scholarship eligibility. I encourage all students taking the test to get plenty of rest the night before, eat a healthy breakfast, and manage stress appropriately. A focused mind, positive attitude, and personal confidence can impact your performance.
Our Upper School Conferences are on Wednesday, October 16th, and our Lower School Conferences are on Thursday, October 17th and Friday, October 18th. They are a great way for our students and their families to discuss not only academic growth but also social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development as well. The Academy takes a holistic approach to education and having a strong school-home relationship is key to continued success for our students.
Lastly, please continue to support our co- and extracurricular activities on campus. I encourage everyone to come out and support our Lancers at their athletic competitions. Your presence shows your support for our student athletes and celebrates both victories and Christian sportsmanship. In addition, mark your calendars for Fright Night on Saturday, October 19th. It is sure to be a fun and festive event that brings our entire Academy community- parents, students, faculty, and staff- together.
As we transition fully into Fall, I encourage all of us to make the most of the time we have left this first semester. May you have a wonderful week and welcome back, Lancer community.

Message from the president
As we take a short break from school next week, I want to express my gratitude for the many people who make Sacred Hearts Academy a wonderful place for our girls and young women to be grounded in the Catholic and Christian values of our founding Sisters.
Thank you to our students who come prepared to school ready to learn and thrive intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Thank you to our families who entrust us with their most precious gifts- their daughters- each and every day. Thank you to our teachers who develop innovative curriculum and pour energy into their instruction so that their students are excited about learning. Thank you to our support staff, board members, donors, and community partners who commit their time, talent, and treasure to forwarding the mission. Lastly, thank you to our Sisters whose vision 115 years ago resulted in a special school known for its academic excellence, athletics program, and outstanding performing arts. I am privileged to be on this journey with all of you this school year.
I encourage our students and faculty to take time during this upcoming break to relax and rest. Explore passions and interests. Spend time with family and friends. Engage in activities that allow you to be creative. Attend daily Mass and pray more. These are great ways to energize and refuel ourselves for the upcoming remainder of the school year. I can not wait to see all of you back on campus with stories to tell about the adventures you had, the places you explored, and the people you spent time with. These memories are precious and what makes life meaningful.
May God bless you and keep you safe this upcoming week. Malama pono.

SEPTEMBER 22 - 28 - SHAGRAM#8
Message from the president
This week, we end the month of September and welcome the month of October. It is amazing that we have been in school for over two months! This upcoming week focuses our attention on our Faith, and the beautiful ways we pray. The Catholic Church designates October as the month of the Most Holy Rosary. Pope Leo XIII encouraged devotion to the Blessed Mother by promoting the use of the Most Holy Rosary. The beautiful prayer brings us closer to Jesus and Mary and is a practice that faithful Catholics have embraced for more than 800 years. This year, we will have a Living Rosary at Sacred Hearts Academy. Our Theology teachers in partnership with Administration will lead this on-campus gathering of our community to recite the Most Holy Rosary. This event will take place on Wednesday morning, October 2nd. James 5:16 tells us, “The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.” The Living Rosary is a powerful activity that will strengthen our Faith here at Sacred Hearts Academy as well as bring us closer together as a Catholic community. It will be followed by First Friday Mass on October 4th. Students will wear their white skirt uniforms as we come together to celebrate the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. As we enter the last week before Fall Break, my prayer is that we continue our good work in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in our lives. May you have a joyous upcoming week.
Christian PERFORMER Inspires with Powerful Performance
On Thursday morning, the school was electrified by an inspiring and uplifting performance from Joe Melendrez, one of America's most exciting Catholic performers. He filled the gym with powerful vocals, energetic beats, and heartfelt lyrics that resonated deeply with the students. His message of hope, faith, and unity was woven into each song, creating an atmosphere of joy and spiritual reflection. Students and teachers alike were on their feet, clapping and singing along, as the performance built up to a crescendo of praise and celebration. It was a moving experience that left everyone energized and inspired for the rest of the day.

UPPER SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Upper School Parent-Teacher Conference on Wednesday, October 16
The Academy is committed to working with parents/guardians to ensure the academic success of their daughters. Students in grades 7-12 who are currently getting multiple D's or at least one F, will have a Parent-Teacher Conference on October 16th. In collaboration with teachers and a grade level counselor, parents/guardians will discuss academic progress and develop a plan for success. Mrs. Maria Lucas will call parents/guardians to schedule appointments.
Get Ready for Success: Why the PSAT Matters!
The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered on Wednesday, October 16, from 7:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for students in grades 10 and 11. The test will be administered in a digital format, with students using their own devices. Watch this video to learn more what students can expect from the digital PSAT/NMSQT.
Taking the PSAT is important because it helps students prepare for the SAT by familiarizing them with the format, types of questions, and testing environment. It also gives valuable insight into areas that need improvement before taking the SAT. Additionally, high scores on the PSAT can qualify students for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which offers recognition and potential scholarships. It's a great opportunity to gain confidence, track progress, and potentially open doors to college
Students in grades 7-9 will be taking the PSAT 8/9. This will also be in a digital format. To learn more about what students can expect, watch this video.
The PSAT 8/9 is important because it serves as a foundational step in preparing students for future standardized tests like the PSAT/NMSQT and SAT. It helps students get comfortable with the test format, question styles, and timing while identifying academic strengths and areas for improvement.
College Visits
This fall, there are many college representatives visiting Sacred Hearts Academy. These visits allow students to learn about admissions, campus life, financial aid, and academic offerings directly from college representatives. It's a great way to ask questions, compare options, and get a feel for what each school has to offer, helping students make more informed decisions about their future education paths.
Here is a list of the colleges visiting next week; sign-up can be done via MAIA Learning:

Message from the president
We are two weeks away from our Fall Break 2024! This year, Fall Break is from October 7th through the 11th. Although our faculty and students will be off-campus during this time, Sacred Hearts Academy staff will be on campus to serve our families and community partners.
As we near the Fall Break and the halfway mark in our first semester, our faculty are delivering high quality, all-girls education to our students by providing them with a multitude of learning activities that meet their unique needs. Students are diligently completing their homework and assignments that help them demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Our campus is buzzing with excitement as students actively participate in the classroom as well as in their co- and extracurricular activities.
I highly encourage all parents and guardians to continue their active involvement in their daughters’ lives. Our students are managing busy schedules that include fulfilling their responsibilities at school, spending time with family and friends, and pursuing their passions and interests. Please continue to support your daughters by encouraging them to maintain healthy habits such as adequate sleep, eating healthy meals and snacks, and being physically active. Ensure they are organized by helping them to keep to a calendar, mapping out different activities on a daily schedule, and checking in with them on their academic progress. Lastly, speak with your daughter about what is happening in her life. Open communication is key to building a strong relationship with your daughter. As always, love and understanding remain essential.
May God bless you this week as we work together in partnership to raise up future female leaders in our Catholic faith and tradition to make a positive impact on our world.

Message from the president
This Saturday, September 14th, Sacred Hearts Academy hosts our annual fundraiser, Uncorked, on our beautiful campus. This is a special evening when members of our community come together to support our scholarship and financial aid program. Over the last six years, we raised significant funds to sponsor many girls and young women at Sacred Hearts Academy. I humbly thank our Sisters, the Board of Directors, and the Parent Board for their unequivocal support of this event as well as the many parents, students, faculty, and staff who give their time, talent, and treasure in order to make this event a reality. Their generosity makes an all-girls, Catholic education possible for many students and their families. I pray that Saturday night will be our biggest fundraiser yet so we are able to welcome more students into the Sacred Hearts Academy family.
I see fundraising as a ministry. It is inviting others to invest in the future of God’s kingdom by helping us educate girls and young women to experience God’s compassionate love revealed in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. We do this in partnership and collaboration with our faculty, staff, parents, guardians, and donors. Your contributions not only help us build a community of learning, but a community of love.
Thank you for your generous support tomorrow and throughout the school year!
Happy Birthday, Sacred Hearts Academy!
On Thursday, September 12, the Sacred Hearts Community gathered to celebrate 115 years of educating girls and young women. The morning assembly featured performances by our cheerleaders, Lower School hula students, and the marching band and color guard. The event opened with a beautiful 'oli performed by Crystale Cayaban, '95, followed by a blessing from Fr. Jeremy Sabugo, and heartfelt testimonials from Haukea Ho, '97 (Dylen, Grade 10 and Kamryn, Grade 2) and Christine Mamotos, '95 (Cassidy, Grade 3). Several legacy alumnae were also in attendance to were also in attendance to join the celebration.

Message from the president
This upcoming week, we celebrate our school’s birthday. Sacred Hearts Academy has been educating girls and young women for 115 years! Our school began when Bishop Libert Boeynaems, ss.cc., had a vision for a Catholic secondary school in Honolulu. He identified a need within our community- to teach girls and young women to live in and love the world as Jesus and Mary did. He had a strong belief that Sacred Hearts Academy would partner with families on this amazing endeavor to develop faith-filled servant leaders for our world.
Over a hundred years later, Sacred Hearts Academy has become the educational center of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. We have a reputation for providing girls and young women with exceptional educational experiences. I have seen Sacred Hearts Academy grow tremendously over the last forty-five years. From the construction and renovation of new buildings to our innovative programming, we have evolved to meet the educational needs of our changing times. Yet, we are firmly grounded in our history, mission, and vision. Our alumnae are out in the world making it a better place for all of us.
We have many special events planned for this week in order to celebrate our school. Please ask your daughters all about the fun and joy we will be having and follow us on our social media as we come together as a community to celebrate 115 years.
Happy birthday, Sacred Hearts Academy!

Message from the president
This Monday, our nation celebrates Labor Day. It is a day when schools and businesses recognize the great contributions of workers to the development and achievement of our great nation. As Catholics, it is our day to reflect on the opportunity we have to participate in God’s creative action in our world.
At Sacred Hearts Academy, I am reminded of our motto: orare et laborare, meaning "to pray and to work." Any student and alumnae will affirm that a Sacred Hearts Academy education includes these two pivotal activities. Each day, we gather together as a community to pray during our Flag ceremony. Faculty and students pray together in their classes. Administrators pray during their meetings.
In addition, Sacred Hearts Academy has a fine reputation of producing good work. Our students are known for their scholarship, athleticism, and artistic endeavors. In this work, they fulfill their potential and exercise their God-given talents. Furthermore, our faculty and staff take great pride in delivering a robust curriculum and supporting the mission at Sacred Hearts Academy. I am inspired by their work each and every day.
May God grant you a wonderful weekend. I hope to see all of you at our Paniolo Pa‘ina this Saturday. Have a restful Monday as well. And see you at Flag on Tuesday morning! Pray for me as I continue the legacy of good work at the Academy. God Bless!

Message from the president
I want to thank all our parents, guardians, and families for attending our Upper School Meet the Teachers Night on Tuesday and our Lower School Back to School Night on Thursday. I pray you had a wonderful time meeting your daughters’ administrators and teachers, visiting our classrooms, and learning more about what is in store for the upcoming school year. It was also a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other parents and guardians since this will be your class family until your daughter graduates from the Academy. My favorite part of this evening is getting to meet our families. I enjoyed talking about your daughters, sharing with you my experiences at the Academy, and learning how we can continue to partner together to make this upcoming school year a joyous one. Your active involvement on our campus is the reason we have been successful for 115 years. Please continue to participate in your daughter’s education from Lower School through Upper School. These are some of the best years of her life, and I invite you to be an active participant in it. May God Bless you this upcoming week.
Furthermore, we welcome Father Jeremy Sabugo to Sacred Hearts Academy! Please see his welcome message below.
Aloha! My name is Father Jeremy Sabugo, ss.cc., and I’m thrilled to be joining you as your school chaplain this year. I was ordained as a priest in 2017 and have spent the past six years serving as a priest in California, Texas, and Massachusetts. This year, I’m grateful to have returned to Hawai’i, the place where I was born and raised—it feels wonderful to be back home.
My most recent assignment was serving as a Hospital Chaplain at The Queen’s Medical Center – Punchbowl. This experience allowed me to reconnect with the people of Hawai’i, deepening my sense of being one with them during their times of greatest need. I will seek to carry the lessons I have learn from my hospital experience into my role as school chaplain.
After 11 years as a religious brother of the Sacred Hearts, I’m eager to begin serving the people of Hawai’i, particularly here at Sacred Hearts Academy as your school chaplain. I recognize that it has been some time since a priest has taken on this role, and I fully intend to embrace this responsibility with the solemnity it deserves.
As your chaplain, I see my role encompassing three key areas: Spiritual Leadership, Pastoral Care, and Community Building. To fulfill these responsibilities effectively, I believe it’s essential that we all work together.
In terms of community building, I’m excited to collaborate with students, faculty, staff, and everyone in our school community. My goal is to ensure that every student experience God’s compassionate love in a meaningful way during their time at Sacred Hearts Academy.
I’m truly humbled and honored to have this opportunity, and with God’s help, I’m committed to making the most of it. I look forward to this journey together. Go Lancers!
uPPER AND LOWER SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
From Friday, August 26th, through Friday, September 6th, our students in Grades K-8 will be taking the Star Assessments from Renaissance Learning in the areas of Reading and Mathematics.
The Star Assessments are short tests that will provide our teachers with personalized learning data for each student.
The tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust in difficulty to each answer students provide. This helps our teachers get the best data to help students in the shortest amount of testing time (about one-third of the time other tests require).
Our teachers will analyze the data they receive from Star Assessments to learn what students already know and what they are ready to learn next, to monitor student growth, and to determine which students may need additional help.
Star Assessments are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.
