The Academy’s Soroptimist Club, also known as the ‘S’
Club, is the student chapter of the Soroptimist International of
Waikiki and is open to students in grades nine to 12. The club primarily
focuses on serving the school and community and fostering a civic-minded
attitude in its members, but also prepares students to assume leadership
positions in the professional world, while helping forge relationships
amongst the student peers.
The club’s service activities run the gamut from repainting
bus shelters in the school’s neighborhood to helping families
construct gingerbread houses during the Easter Seal’s Gingerbread
Festival to manning stations at the Honolulu Advertiser’s
Jingle Bell Run.
In addition, each month, the club hosts prominent female professionals
who share their insights and inspirations from working in their
chosen career field. Past speakers have included Judge Sandra Sims
and Fay Chiogioji of Hawaiian Electric. To gain insight into the
working world, club members also take learning excursions to some
of Honolulu’s most successful businesses, such as KHNL-TV,
First Hawaiian Bank and Kuakini Medical Center.
