Mu Kappa, the Academy’s math club, gives students an opportunity
to explore mathematical topics not generally covered during coursework,
pursue applications of mathematics and prepare for interscholastic
competition.
During lunchtime meetings, club members sometimes explore the lives
of historical and contemporary figures who have influenced the body
of mathematical knowledge. Other explorations lead to discussions
of mathematical connections in physical phenomena, such as Stone
Henge, the Egyptian pyramids or space flight. This year, club members
are learning to program a robot, controlled by a graphic calculator.
The major function of Mu Kappa is the support and training of the
Academy’s Oahu Mathematics League (OML) team. Members attend
regular practice sessions and hold tryouts before each meet to select
the members best prepared for competitions on the Varsity and Junior
Varsity divisions. These competitions feature entrants from many
of Oahu’s private and public schools.
