In association with the Hawai’i Yacht Club’s Junior
Sailing Program and the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA),
the Academy developed LancerSailing, a program to introduce students
to the sport of sailing.
In addition to sailing, the program’s members are encouraged
to have fun; build collaboration and teamwork skills; improve physical
conditioning and overall health; learn seamanship, discipline and
responsibility and develop critical-thinking skills, strategy and
applied science.
The program begins with novice class sailing for students with
little or no experience; while intermediate sailing is for the student
who wants to build on and improve her current skills with emphasis
on boat-handling proficiency and the Racing Rules of Sailing. Advanced
sailing is the final level and is for those interested in furthering
their skills through competition in the Hawaii Youth Sailing Association
(HYSA).
In Spring 2003, sailing was sanctioned as a Varsity and Junior
Varsity sport in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH). Twelve
sailors represent the Academy in ILH competition which runs from
February through April. The top finishers attend the Pacific Coast
Championships (PCC) Gold Fleet or the Silver Fleet, depending on
their finish. The top two finishers from these regattas continue
on to compete in the National ISSA Championships.
