June 1, 2007 – Sacred
Hearts Academy has been selected as a National School of Character award
winner—one of only ten in the nation. Sacred Hearts Academy will be awarded
national recognition and a $20,000 grant as a top ten finalist. $10,000 of the
grant will be used on a character education program at the Academy and $10,000
to assist other educators in the community.
The Character Education Partnership (CEP) first identified 25 finalists, including
Sacred Hearts, through a rigorous screening process. A team of evaluators from
CEP conducted a site visit to Hawaii on April 11, making final selections based
on rigorous review. The purpose of the CEP program is to develop young people
of good character who become responsible and caring citizens. Winning programs
will be recognized at CEP’s 14th National Forum on Character Education,
Investing in America’s Future, November 1–3, 2007, at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel in Arlington, Virginia.
According to Betty White, Sacred Hearts Academy, Head of School, “Character
development, service to others and responsible citizenry are closely held values
at Sacred Hearts Academy and being recognized as a School of Character is a
great honor. We are humbled by the opportunity to share character development
resources with other educators in the community.”
The National Schools of Character (NSOC) awards program has recognized K–12
schools and school districts for providing exemplary comprehensive character
education programs since 1998.
The national awards program is made possible by generous support from the John
Templeton Foundation and the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources.
