The Academy’s student chapter of Amnesty International upholds the organization’s goal of shaping a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other notable rights standards upheld throughout the world. Members research abuses occurring around the globe and develop action plans to prevent and end such injustices.
Each month, club members receive Urgent Actions from the international organization detailing the plight and torture of political prisoners in foreign countries. And, in an effort to protect the freedoms of conscience, expression and from discrimination due to these individuals, members write letters to the governments urging the release of these prisoners. In addition, the club celebrates Human Rights Day by urging members of the Academy community to sign petitions for the release of political prisoners.
Members of the club, from grades nine to 12, also participate in demonstrations at the Capitol, car washes and awareness fairs to increase awareness of their causes.
